CROWN TO PUBLISH AVERY GILBERT'S "WHAT THE NOSE KNOWS" ON JUNE 24, 2008
MONTCLAIR,
New Jersey. February 24, 2008. -- Synesthetics, Inc. President Avery Gilbert's new book "What the Nose Knows: The Science of Scent in Everyday Life" will go on sale June 24, 2008. Written for anyone who is intrigued by the sense of smell, "What the Nose Knows" effortlessly blends science and popular culture as it takes the reader on an entertaining tour of our least known sense.
Gilbert, an olfactory expert who spent over two years researching and writing the book, says his goal was to answer the questions people frequently ask him about their sense of smell. He says, "Lots of people are fascinated by smell but unaware of how much new science has been done in the last few years. My book brings them up to date while dispelling some of the myths that have grown up around the topic."
"What the Nose Knows" includes sections on smell geniuses, subliminal scent advertising, odor memory, electronic noses, and the aroma chemistry of baby farts.
Gilbert hopes readers will be entertained as well as educated: "I wanted to write something different. So this may be the only smell book that quotes both Walt Whitman and Eric Cartman, and it's certainly the only one to include a story about O.J. Simpson."
"What the Nose Knows" is published by Crown (ISBN 140008234X) and will be available in bookstores on June 24, 2008.
It can be pre-ordered now at Amazon.com.

AVERY GILBERT QUOTED ON SENSUAL SCENTS FOR
VALENTINE’S DAY IN THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE
MONTCLAIR,
New Jersey. February 10, 2008. -- Synesthetics, Inc. President Avery Gilbert is quoted in today’s
edition of the Chicago Tribune on selecting fragrances for one’s
Valentine.
In a story headlined “6 smokin’ scents: The
right potion can be powerful—but it might play hard to get,”
reporter Heidi Moore quotes Gilbert on the power of smells to acquire an
emotional tone, and how certain classes of scent are associated with sex
and seduction.
Moore notes that the sensual impact of a fragrance can
come from “what Gilbert calls the ‘self-reinforcement
effect’ -- meaning that ‘if you put it on and you feel sexy,
you'll project sexier.’ ”

AVERY GILBERT OF SYNESTHETICS TO SPEAK AT HBA SPRING
CONFERENCE
MONTCLAIR,
New Jersey. January 31, 2008. --
Synesthetics, Inc. President Avery Gilbert will speak on scent and consumer
perception at the HBA Spring Conference on March 5, 2008 at the Jacob K.
Javits Convention Center in New York.
Gilbert will appear as part of the program
“Achieving Well-Being: The New Paradigm,” which addresses the
growing consumer demand for healthy inner and outer beauty as well as brand
marketers’ quest for “Beauty-in-the-Bottle.”
In his presentation, “Using Scent to Communicate
Well Being: Appealing to the Consumer’s Cognitive Nose,”
Gilbert challenges the prevailing wisdom that smell is strictly an emotional
sense. He will discuss recent scientific evidence showing that odor
perception is, in many ways, a thoughtful, rational process.
Gilbert believes that communicating to what he calls the
consumer’s “cognitive nose” is an important and underused
way of conveying the well being benefits of consumer products.

AVERY GILBERT QUOTED ON TEEN FRAGRANCES IN THE WALL
STREET JOURNAL
MONTCLAIR,
New Jersey. August 25, 2007. --
Synesthetics, Inc. President Avery Gilbert is quoted in today's edition of
the Wall Street Journal on style trends in fragrances aimed at teen
consumers. In a story by reporter Rachel Dodes headlined "Fragrances:
Why School Stinks This Year," Gilbert notes that "scents aimed at
younger consumers are typically less complex and have fewer ingredients.
They tend to contain ‘edible’ notes, such as vanilla, cookie
and citrus, as opposed to heavy florals, which can be expensive and too
overtly sexy."
The story
ran on page P7 of the August 25, 2007 edition of the Wall Street Journal.
